TREC’s Foundations in Leadership Program (FLP) is designed for individuals early in their careers to dive into their understanding of and practice around leadership. The program is intended to support early leaders to design a personal leadership approach that will support their continued growth within their careers and the sector.

The program focuses on exploring the foundations of TREC’s leadership model and supporting participants to build on their inherent leadership capacities while gaining the clarity it takes to develop and practice their own leadership style.

Throughout the week, participants will have the opportunity to:

  • Learn with and from a community of peers doing similar work in service of advancing conservation and community engagement
  • Integrate learning by experimenting with the application of leadership tools and approaches through exercises and simulations
  • Strategize on their leadership and determine their specific leadership goals to identify a clear action plan to achieve them
  • Experience a confidential and generative space to name and address barriers or blocks
  • Take advantage of the space and time to rest, renew, and recenter

Program Details

FLP consists of one 4½-day in-person session (Monday-Friday) held at a retreat center outside of Seattle, WA.

At the core of FLP is our commitment to supporting early-career leaders to unpack harmful notions of leadership, draw on their rich lived experiences and diverse forms of knowledge, and move collectively towards a new understanding of leadership. With this in mind, in addition to the in-person program session, FLP incorporates multi-faceted, holistic support for leaders including:

  • One-on-one coaching sessions with a TREC leadership associate
  • CliftonStrengths assessment and report

Program Curriculum

Our FLP curriculum draws on 20 years of leadership development work, as well as new emergent ways of thinking, to support early leaders to build the foundations of their personal leadership style and skills.

The heart of the program is our in-person session, during which participants will explore:

  • Leading from Within: a focus on self-awareness, leveraging your experience and knowledge, connecting deeply with the sense of purpose that draws you into your work, learning how you learn, and actively reflecting on what you’d want to lean into.
  • Interpersonal Effectiveness: taking a deep dive into emotional intelligence, understanding the processes that drive our thinking and influence the results we get, honing understanding of effective listening, expanding communication skills, and fostering awareness that helps us and others to leverage the creativity and skills to accomplish our goals
  • Navigating Difference: recognizing diversity, equity and inclusion as key leadership competencies, exploring the many perspectives and experiences that bring us to our work, learning how bias impacts our perspectives, relationships and effectiveness as leaders and exploring the intersection of power and identity.
  • Profiles of Leadership: exploring leadership through identifying key competencies, sharing informative frameworks, leveraging our individual and collective experiences of leadership, defining what effective leadership is, and determining your leadership values and vision.
  • Achieving Results with Others: going beyond individual leadership to defining the leader’s focus and skills supporting achieving results (self and others), understanding the importance and power of fostering engagement among staff and stakeholders, exploring key skills of decision-making and engaging in work to support working with others to effectively accomplish results.
  • Sustaining Effectiveness and Well-being: diving into key perspectives and skills needed to effectively manage workload, exploring the biologic basis of stress and resilience, understanding how to foster well-being, and determining a personal well-being action plan.
