Presenter Biography
Mary Ochs, to her core, is a community organizer and coalition builder bringing decades of experience to her consulting and coaching practice with nonprofit social justice leaders and organizations. Mary is the founder/executive director of numerous grass- roots organizations, most recently the Hawai’i Workers Center. Those successes also attracted opponents who attempted to distract, discredit or destroy those same organizations. Thus, Mary learned early on how to protect, prepare and defend against opposition attacks. She led a team within RoadMap Consulting to create a series of trainings, webinars and tool kits known as “Weathering the Storms: Preventing & Preparing for Opposition Attacks.”
Mary worked as the Organizing Director for the Center for Community Change where she formed several national coalitions, while also providing direct capacity building support to scores of small and large social change organizations.
Mary is the Rapid Response Team Leader for the Progressive Victory Team. She possesses basic Spanish language skills. She serves as an active board member and fundraiser for several social change organizations. She is based in the Los Angeles, CA area.
Linda Garcia Barnard began working for social justice organizations in the early 90s when she became an activist fighting for paid leave with 9to5, National Association of Working Women. As a single mom eager to make change for women like her faced with barriers to the workforce, she became an organizer and led civic engagement and policy campaigns that lifted voices of those exploited by welfare-to-work policies. She then moved into management in the early 2000s where she has worked to develop and sustain nonprofits through keen understanding of nonprofit Generally Accepted Accounting Principles, 501c3 and 501c4 IRS compliance rules and campaign finance and other regulatory requirements. She then moved into the Director of Finance and Administration role at Family Values at Work with responsibility for finance, administration and operations departments.
Linda serves as the principal for Nonprofit Management Services, LLC based in Wisconsin. In addition to her decades of nonprofit experience, she holds an MBA, is a BDO Certified Nonprofit Accounting Professional, and is trained through Ford Foundation’s Financial Resiliency project as well as Rockwood’s Art of Leadership cohort.
