SUMMARY:Principles for Ethical Power Usage in the Workplace
DESCRIPTION:Date & Time\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPresented by\n\n\n\n\nJuliette Lee\, TREC Senior Consultant\n\n\n\n\nLocation\n\n\n\n\n\nTREC webinars use ZOOM. Login/Join instructions will be sent to you automatically by email after you have completed registration. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDescription\n\n\n\nHave you ever fretted over how to give sensitive feedback to a supervisor or funder\, or been nervous to correct or disagree with someone because of how that might affect your reputation within a team? How do you deal with a respected but difficult colleague? These questions all share one common conundrum: how can I wield and use power in a complex social setting? We tend to associate power with formal titles or leadership roles\, but its actual circulation and expression is a bit more complex. We’ll explore power within the workplace by orienting to some helpful frames for recognizing and interpreting its expression then root into some principles for what its ethical usage can entail. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMade possible by the generous support of Wilburforce Foundation and offered free of charge.

SUMMARY:The Governance Gray Zone: Navigating Board and Staff Roles and Decision-making
DESCRIPTION:Date & Time\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPresented by\n\n\n\n\naparna rajagopal\, TREC Senior Consultant\n\n\n\n\nLocation\n\n\n\n\n\nTREC webinars use ZOOM. Login/Join instructions will be sent to you automatically by email after you have completed registration. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDescription\n\n\n\nMost board-staff conflict doesn’t stem from a lack of goodwill. It stems from a lack of clarity. Well-intentioned board members want to help. Staff leaders want support and autonomy. But when governance and management responsibilities become blurred\, organizations often swing between two unhealthy extremes: board micromanagement and board disengagement. \n\n\n\nIn this practical webinar\, we’ll explore one of the most common sources of tension in nonprofit organizations: confusion about the respective roles of boards and staff. Drawing on governance lessons from the field and TREC’s practical Board v. Staff Role Guide\, participants will learn how to distinguish between governance\, management\, and the critical gray zone where boards and staff work together. \n\n\n\nWhether you’re a board member\, executive director\, or senior staff leader\, you’ll leave with greater clarity about who advises\, who decides\, and who does the work—helping your organization function more effectively and with less friction. \n\n\n\nParticipants will learn\n\n\n\nBy the end of this webinar\, participants will be able to: \n\n\n\n\nDistinguish between governance responsibilities and management responsibilities.\n\n\n\nRecognize common signs of both board micromanagement and board disengagement.\n\n\n\nUnderstand the respective roles of boards\, executive directors\, and staff in organizational decision-making.\n\n\n\nIdentify when board approval\, board input\, or staff authority is most appropriate.\n\n\n\nUse practical frameworks to navigate gray areas and avoid role confusion.\n\n\n\nStrengthen accountability and trust across board-staff relationships.\n\n\n\n\nWho this is for\n\n\n\n\nBoard members\n\n\n\nStaff who interact with boards or are curious about board vs. staff roles\n\n\n\nExecutive Directors\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMade possible by the generous support of Wilburforce Foundation and offered free of charge.

In a time of political uncertainty\, they are being called to do two things at once: stay grounded in their mission and adapt quickly to changing conditions. For many groups—especially those working in rural and politically complex landscapes—this moment calls for sharper focus\, strategic clarity\, and resilience in liminal times.  \n\n\n\nJoin a panel of experienced leaders in government affairs\, conservation advocacy\, and rural political organizing to explore what the U.S. midterm elections could mean for conservation and community-based land stewardship. Panelists will share insights on emerging strategies\, how to prioritize limited resources\, and which political and policy levers may be most effective in the years ahead. Participants will leave with a clearer sense of how to focus their efforts and navigate what lies ahead.  \n\n\n\nParticipants will learn\n\n\n\n\nHow to prioritize limited resources.\n\n\n\nA clearer sense of how to focus their efforts and navigate what lies ahead. \n\n\n\n\nWho this is for\n\n\n\n\nWilburforce grantees\n\n\n\nCLF partners\n\n\n\nCampaign professionals\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPresenter Biography\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRyan stepped into ONDA’s executive director role in 2018\, with 20 years of experience in the conservation sector under his belt. \n\n\n\nWhile serving as the executive director of the Bend-based Upper Deschutes Watershed Council\, he built award-winning restoration and stewardship programs\, developed long-term partnerships\, and recruited a talented team of staff and collaborators. He has taught courses at the university level\, worked as a research fellow with the Smithsonian Institution and led several ecological research projects.  He earned his undergraduate degree in environmental science from the University of California at Berkeley and his masters in ecology from the University of Arizona. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDavid Feinman (he/him) is CLF’s Vice President of Government Affairs. SUMMARY:How We Stay in the Conservation Movement: A Conversation About Grace
DESCRIPTION:Date & Time\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLocation\n\n\n\n\n\nTREC webinars use ZOOM. Login/Join instructions will be sent to you automatically by email after you have completed registration. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDescription\n\n\n\nRight now\, leaders are being asked to endure\, to function\, and to support their teams in a time of profound upheaval and grief. In the conservation space and beyond\, leaders are navigating impossible tradeoffs\, holding deep loss while continuing to push forward within systems that\, while always flawed\, are accelerating harm and injustice in new and painful ways. \n\n\n\nAmid it all\, leaders are extending so much grace and care to one another. Showing up for our teams and our communities is a generous and demanding act. Too often\, it is leaders with marginalized identities who carry an outsized share of the emotional labor required to keep both people and movements resourced and alive. And still\, we want to show up for people and places as best we can. \n\n\n\nJoin this interactive conversation with: \n\n\n\n\nRonda Lee Chapman of the Trust for Public Land\n\n\n\nDavid Lamfrom of the National Parks Conservation Association\n\n\n\nKristi Chester Vance of Together Rising as an Environmental Community (TREC)\n\n\n\n\nAs we face the heartbreak of this time as well as the chronic harms of ongoing injustice\, how do we allow grace — and joy! — to flow back toward ourselves? How do we create practices that allow us to step back and renew\, so that we can stay in the work without sacrificing ourselves? And how do we carry the load equitably\, and together? \n\n\n\nThrough conversation\, self-reflection\, and interactive exercises\, we’ll focus on bringing humanity into leadership — creating permission for leaders to acknowledge struggles and burnout. Our goal is that you leave with a trail map to the joy and grace you deserve\, a good laugh in your belly\, a campfire of validation\, and a strong tailwind as you carry forward. \n\n\n\nThe Conservation Capacity Project is cohosting this conversation with TREC to strengthen our community. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMade possible by the generous support of Wilburforce Foundation and offered free of charge.
