The Program and Communications Coordinator (“Coordinator”) is responsible for day-to-day program and volunteer support and works with and supports the other four Coalition staff members in various ways. The Coordinator assists with communications around program goals and accomplishments for Coalition social media channels, the Coalition website, and Coalition emails; manages and coordinates program volunteers; completes weekly administrative tasks such as checking voicemails and physical mail and processing donations; and assists with Coalition participation on community-based advisory committees and working groups.
- Proof of full vaccination (including boosters) for Covid-19 is required for this position.
Required knowledge, skills, and abilities:
- Understanding of or a strong interest in local conservation issues in the Sonoran Desert of southern Arizona, including advocacy and conservation policy, habitat conservation planning, open space preservation, endangered species and wildlife habitat protection, wildlife linkage and road ecology principles, environmental justice, and community science.
- Excellent writing and public communication skills, including email communications to supporters and volunteers, social media posts, newsletter articles, public speaking, and science-based communications.
- A strong desire to innovate and explore strategies to intersect program goals with outreach, fundraising, communications, donor relations, and organizational culture.
- Competence in MS Office, Adobe, and other computer software as needed.
Preferred knowledge, skills, and abilities (or a demonstrated desire to learn):
- Experience with non-invasive wildlife survey methods, including wildlife camera monitoring.
- Experience in volunteer management and leading community science-based projects.
- Ability to recruit, motivate, and manage a group of individuals providing volunteer time vital to the organization.
- Competence in database management, including experience using MS Access.
Required education and experience:
- Bachelor’s Degree in natural resources, wildlife management, environmental policy, communications, journalism, public administration or related field (or 4+ years equivalent experience).
- 2+ years volunteer management experience or equivalent management experience and a desire to work with volunteers.
- Reliable transportation needed to remote project sites.
Primary tasks and areas of responsibility:
Volunteer Management (25%)
- Assist with volunteer management, including delivering supplies, planning events, and assisting with volunteer training.
- Process paperwork such as volunteer waivers and manage computer loans for interns and volunteers.
- Assist the Conservation Science Director with managing the Coalition’s scientific data and wildlife camera databases, especially by engaging volunteers to import data, completing photo identifications, and pulling outreach quality photos for communications.
- Assist the Associate Director with the implementation of the Coalition’s communications plan by providing program-based communications for various audiences and in various formats, including but not limited to the Coalition website and social media channels, emails to supporters and volunteers, articles for a print newsletter, and materials for fundraising campaigns.
- Assist staff in all areas of program implementation, including community science projects and conservation advocacy.
- In collaboration with the Executive Director, participate in community-based working groups and advisory committees and attend public meetings for local elected bodies on behalf of the Coalition.
- Assist the Executive Director in monitoring the agendas of local elected bodies, such as the Pima County Board of Supervisors, Tucson City Council, Marana Town Council, and Oro Valley Town Council.
- Assist the Executive Director with various duties including outreach, attending meetings, and researching policies relating to conservation and land use.
- Assist the Operations and Finance Director with administrative tasks such checking voicemails, checking physical mail at our office, and maintenance of physical office space.
- Process incoming donations through the website and physical mail, including producing thank you cards, inputting donations into the Coalition database, and coordinating with the Operations and Finance Director on making deposits into the Coalition bank account.
- Assist the Associate Director with internal reporting and tracking of various metrics related to fundraising, communications, volunteer hours, and outreach.
(Note: Total time devoted to all projects adds up to ~80% to account for unforeseen duties.)

The Coalition’s mission is to protect the biodiversity of the Sonoran Desert in southern Arizona through science-based advocacy, education, and collaboration. We do this through proactive habitat conservation planning, opposing destructive projects, protecting wildlife linkages, and community science research. We are an alliance of 32 conservation and neighborhood Member Groups, representing nearly 30,000 people, that formed in February 1998.
