SUMMARY:Hold the Line\, Shift the Strategy: Conservation in a Midterm Year
DESCRIPTION:Date & Time\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWebinar Panel\n\n\n\n\nRyan Houston\, Executive Director\n\n\n\nDavid Feinman\, Vice President of Government Affairs\n\n\n\nKiersten Iwai\, Board Member\n\n\n\n\nTREC Host\n\n\n\naparna rajagopal\, TREC Senior Consultant \n\n\n\nLocation\n\n\n\n\n\nTREC webinars use ZOOM. Login/Join instructions will be sent to you automatically by email after you have completed registration. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDescription\n\n\n\nAfter a decade of growth and program expansion\, many conservation organizations across the West and beyond are at an inflection point. In a time of political uncertainty\, they are being called to do two things at once: stay grounded in their mission and adapt quickly to changing conditions. For many groups—especially those working in rural and politically complex landscapes—this moment calls for sharper focus\, strategic clarity\, and resilience in liminal times.  \n\n\n\nJoin a panel of experienced leaders in government affairs\, conservation advocacy\, and rural political organizing to explore what the U.S. midterm elections could mean for conservation and community-based land stewardship. Panelists will share insights on emerging strategies\, how to prioritize limited resources\, and which political and policy levers may be most effective in the years ahead. Participants will leave with a clearer sense of how to focus their efforts and navigate what lies ahead.  \n\n\n\nParticipants will learn\n\n\n\n\nHow to prioritize limited resources.\n\n\n\nA clearer sense of how to focus their efforts and navigate what lies ahead. \n\n\n\n\nWho this is for\n\n\n\n\nWilburforce grantees\n\n\n\nCLF partners\n\n\n\nCampaign professionals\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPresenter Biography\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRyan stepped into ONDA’s executive director role in 2018\, with 20 years of experience in the conservation sector under his belt. \n\n\n\nWhile serving as the executive director of the Bend-based Upper Deschutes Watershed Council\, he built award-winning restoration and stewardship programs\, developed long-term partnerships\, and recruited a talented team of staff and collaborators. Through this work\, he developed a reputation as a committed and effective leader in Oregon conservation\, well known for strategic vision and a dedication to collaboration. He has taught courses at the university level\, worked as a research fellow with the Smithsonian Institution and led several ecological research projects.  He earned his undergraduate degree in environmental science from the University of California at Berkeley and his masters in ecology from the University of Arizona. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDavid Feinman (he/him) is CLF’s Vice President of Government Affairs. Prior to joining CLF\, David served as Washington Representative for both the Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany (Claims Conference) and World Jewish Restitution Organization (WJRO)\, as Senior Legislative Associate and Project Director for The Jewish Federations of North America (JFNA)\, and on the staff of former U.S. Congressman Robert Wexler of Florida and former U.S. Congresswoman Shelley Berkley of Nevada. \n\n\n\nDavid is an adjunct professor in the Department of Government\, School of Public Affairs at American University in Washington\, DC\, where he teaches courses on Congress and Legislative Behavior and a Dialogue Skills Practicum on Grassroots Advocacy and Coalition Building. Most recently\, she led and grew Forward Montana\, a statewide organization that makes civic engagement more accessible to young Montanans. Under her leadership\, the organization has achieved remarkable success\, including playing a vital role in overturning unconstitutional voter suppression laws in Montana. \n\n\n\nKiersten approaches her work with the same energy she approaches life – seeing the joy in every situation and the human behind every conversation. She loves playing in the mountains\, escaping reality with a good book\, and dancing the night away. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nMade possible by the generous support of Wilburforce Foundation and offered free of charge.

SUMMARY:How We Stay in the Conservation Movement: A Conversation About Grace
DESCRIPTION:Date & Time\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLocation\n\n\n\n\n\nTREC webinars use ZOOM. Login/Join instructions will be sent to you automatically by email after you have completed registration. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDescription\n\n\n\nRight now\, leaders are being asked to endure\, to function\, and to support their teams in a time of profound upheaval and grief. In the conservation space and beyond\, leaders are navigating impossible tradeoffs\, holding deep loss while continuing to push forward within systems that\, while always flawed\, are accelerating harm and injustice in new and painful ways. \n\n\n\nAmid it all\, leaders are extending so much grace and care to one another. Showing up for our teams and our communities is a generous and demanding act. Too often\, it is leaders with marginalized identities who carry an outsized share of the emotional labor required to keep both people and movements resourced and alive. And still\, we want to show up for people and places as best we can. \n\n\n\nJoin this interactive conversation with: \n\n\n\n\nRonda Lee Chapman of the Trust for Public Land\n\n\n\nDavid Lamfrom of the National Parks Conservation Association\n\n\n\nKristi Chester Vance of Together Rising as an Environmental Community (TREC)\n\n\n\n\nAs we face the heartbreak of this time as well as the chronic harms of ongoing injustice\, how do we allow grace — and joy! — to flow back toward ourselves? How do we create practices that allow us to step back and renew\, so that we can stay in the work without sacrificing ourselves? And how do we carry the load equitably\, and together? \n\n\n\nThrough conversation\, self-reflection\, and interactive exercises\, we’ll focus on bringing humanity into leadership — creating permission for leaders to acknowledge struggles and burnout. Our goal is that you leave with a trail map to the joy and grace you deserve\, a good laugh in your belly\, a campfire of validation\, and a strong tailwind as you carry forward. \n\n\n\nThe Conservation Capacity Project is cohosting this conversation with TREC to strengthen our community. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMade possible by the generous support of Wilburforce Foundation and offered free of charge.

Through Hozhonigo Consulting\, she partners with communities to secure federal\, philanthropic\, and private funding while ensuring proposals remain rooted in sovereignty\, cultural values\, and lived experience.  \n\n\n\nA former public defender\, Onawa brings a deep commitment to equity and access to her work. She saw firsthand how under-resourced Native communities were navigating complex systems without adequate support — and turned her love of writing into a vehicle for change. Today\, she helps Tribal governments and Native organizations translate community priorities into compelling\, fundable proposals that bring critical resources home.  \n\n\n\nIn addition to leading Hozhonigo Consulting\, Onawa serves as President of the Hozhonigo Institute\, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit focused on increasing equitable access to funding in Indian Country. She is also the founder of the Tribal Funding Registry\, a software platform designed to help Tribes and Native-serving organizations more effectively track and pursue funding opportunities.  \n\n\n\nOnawa’s work is grounded in the belief that communities closest to the challenges are also closest to the solutions — and that grant writing should strengthen sovereignty\, not compromise it.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\nMade possible by the generous support of Wilburforce Foundation and offered free of charge.
