Salary
& Benefit Survey of Western Environmental Groups, by
TREC.
Over the summer of 2008, TREC conducted its third salary survey
of environmental organizations throughout the North American
west that work to protect wild lands and wildlife. Our purpose
in producing this report is to provide those working in the
environmental sector with information that they can use to gauge
their salaries and benefits policies. Our stakeholders have
consistently told us that they have used previous results to
help compare their policies to those of other similarly situated
organizations and, where needed, to adjust their compensation
packages. TREC remains the only nonprofit organization that
compiles and disseminates this important information.

Strategic Planning in Western Grassroots Conservation
Groups: Lessons from the Field,
by TREC, and Nancy Adess, Editor in Chief.
Strategic
Planning is a term much bandied about, meaning different things to
different people and groups, and applied in a wide variety of ways.
In spring 2005, we interviewed nine
conservation leaders and four strategic planning facilitators about
their experiences with strategic planning. We’ve gathered here what
we learned from these interviews as well as the lessons we’ve
gathered from TREC’s eight years of experience working with
grassroots conservation groups in the West on strategic planning.

Building a Stronger Conservation Community: Key
Challenges and Effective Actions, by TREC, and Nancy Adess,
Editor in Chief.
The
conservation community is facing very serious challenges. Those
of us who work to expand the environmental movement’s successes,
preserve wilderness and ensure environmental protection must
rethink who we are and how we do our work. External political
factors only compound internal challenges that early successes
allowed us to overlook. TREC’s new paper, Building a Stronger
Conservation Community: Key Challenges and Effective Actions,
presents some fundamental ways that grassroots conservation
groups can address our movement’s current challenges — by honing
mission, planning realistically, rethinking outreach and
constituency building, and making some difficult choices about
internal functioning.
