Organizational Background: Founded in 1965, the Colorado Environmental Coalition is one of the states preeminent conservation organizations. The Coalition serves as the grassroots organizing arm of Colorado's conservation community, working from offices in Denver, Grand Junction, and Craig. CEC's purpose is to organize the conservation community and Colorado citizens to win on priority issues and campaigns. CEC takes a leadership role in convening its 100+ partner organizations and other allies to identify, prioritize, and select critical issues on which to focus, then organizes and mobilizes around these issues, and designs and implements successful campaigns to achieve policy wins on them. Position Summary: The Membership & Volunteer Coordinator is responsible for raising annual operating funds through membership development, special appeals, and events. Reporting to the Development Manager, the Coordinator will design and implement membership mailings, publications, online fundraising appeals, and membership events, and will assist with coordination of CECs annual fundraiser gala. This position manages all donor database functions, including gift and record coding, data import/export, protocols for gift processing, report generation, and record maintenance. The position is responsible for recruiting, training and coordinating members and activists to assist with key conservation campaigns and organizational projects. S/he represents, and trains volunteers to represent CEC at public festivals, concerts and through phone banks and Capitol Watch. The Coordinator maintains close relationships with CEC members who are volunteer activists and keeps current on local events and happenings in order to generate action on campaigns. The Coordinator hires and trains interns for various positions, and works closely with all CEC staff to identify and provide for their volunteer and activist needs. Responsibilities: Membership and Marketing Work in partnership with the Development Manager and Deputy Director to create annual development and membership plan. Manage, regularly assess, and grow CECs statewide membership program. Plan, write, and execute direct, renewal, appeal, and recruitment mailings based on annual membership budget and revenue goals. Draft, edit and format general correspondence including letters and gift acknowledgements. Respond to member inquiries for information. Maintain workplace giving program with Community Shares. Expand member upgrade strategies and other methods to raise annual funds and expand supporter base in conjunction with the Development Manager. Coordinate renewal letters for coalition partners, and work with Program Director to recruit and maintain an active and diverse list of dues-paying organizational member groups. Oversee content development and execution of web-based fundraising campaigns. Manage design, production, and distribution of quarterly newsletter and other marketing materials including brochures and annual report. Coordinate statewide membership events and open houses, and assist with fundraising events, including CECs annual fundraiser gala and house parties. Maintain and manage relationships with external vendors. Coordinate online member communications, including monthly updates, event invitations, online fundraising appeals, conservation job alerts, and electronic thank you letters. Database Management Manage all database functions, including gift and record coding, data import/export, protocols for gift processing, report generation, and record maintenance. Act as lead person for database entry and tracking of new members, volunteers, and activists. Volunteer and Intern Management Manage outreach and volunteer program including annual planning, budgeting and follow up reporting. Recruit, engage, and retain an active CEC volunteer and citizen activist base in cooperation with other CEC staff around the state to support priority issue campaigns and organizational objectives. Coordinate Capitol Watch, a statewide legislative monitoring and activist engagement program. Activate volunteers and citizens for letter writing campaigns, attendance at hearings and other public events, monitoring legislation, generating phone calls to decision makers, leafleting, data entry, membership mailings, voter education and Get Out the Vote events, and tabling at public events. Assist with West Slope efforts, including membership events, statewide membership strategy, and the statewide Capitol Watch program. Support CEC organizers and coalition partners with grassroots organizing on priority state legislative campaigns and other environmental issues, as appropriate. Coordinate CECs statewide internship program, working with staff to develop positions and recruit intern candidates, and assisting with management and supervision of interns. Minimum Qualifications: 2+ years experience with membership, development, volunteer coordination, event logistics and planning, or related experience; environmental conservation background preferred. Bachelors degree in environmental studies, communications, or related field. Ability to develop new techniques to cultivate CECs members. Experience with direct mail fundraising and recruitment. Ability to build and maintain relationships in order to recruit, manage, and mobilize volunteers and citizens to take effective action on Colorado conservation priorities. Solid editing and publishing skills (experience with Adobe InDesign or other layout software, a plus). Experience updating and managing a website as well as online fundraising. Outstanding member/donor database management and computer skills. Working knowledge of MS Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint; knowledge of ASP email services and databases (GetActive, Convio, and SalesForce/CommonGround, a plus) Experience with event planning and outreach activities. Capacity to work effectively with a diversity of people and constituencies. Belief in protecting Colorado's environment through citizen action. Demonstrated ability and willingness to work independently with minimal day to day supervision. Excellent organizational, presentation, and verbal and written communication skills. Ability to handle multiple projects and work efficiently to meet deadlines. Knowledge of Colorado politics, conservation, and public lands issues a plus. Special Job Requirements: Have own vehicle with valid Colorado Drivers License, registration, and insurance that can reliably travel throughout Colorado, sometimes on short notice. Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends as needed. Physical Demands: The Membership & Volunteer Coordinator regularly uses a computer/phone, walks, bends, and climbs stairs. Must be able to maneuver, lift and carry event materials, packages and supplies up to 35 pounds. Offices and buildings are totally smoke-free.
